Deadline Approaching for Filing a Property Tax Grievance

The Suffolk County May 16th deadline for filing a property tax grievance is quickly approaching. Every year the filing period begins on May 1st and ends on the third Tuesday in May. This year, taxpayers have just twelve business days to complete a filing; if a taxpayer misses the deadline, the next time a filing can be made is the following year.

Suffolk County grievances are filed at the town level with the Assessor’s Office in the town where the property is located, unlike in Nassau County where taxpayers file directly with the County. Each of the ten towns in Suffolk County administer filing procedures specific to that town: Babylon, Brookhaven, East Hampton, Huntington, Islip, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Smithtown, South Hampton and Southold. Whether it be in person, by mail or electronic submission, it is best to research your town’s requirements for filing and seek guidance by an attorney experienced in property tax assessment appeals; but know that May 16th is the Suffolk deadline across the board.
