Nassau County is Finally Poised to Expand Eligibility for Property Tax Exemptions to Seniors and Disabled Citizens

After years of inaction while residential taxes consistently spiraled upward, Nassau County is finally poised to expand eligibility for property tax exemptions to seniors and disabled citizens by elevating the annual income cap for eligibility to $58,400. A substantial increase from the former cap of $38,400, the change also puts Nassau County on equal footing with the income caps used by New York City. The new cap opens the door to tax relief for many previously ineligible senior and disabled property owners.

Exemptions range from 5% to 50% depending on income. Earlier this month, the Nassau County Legislature passed legislation which will become effective later this year.
